What is Fresh Start?- Independent Study Educational Strategy
- Not a "remedial" nor a "tutorial" program
- Meet with teacher once a week
- Work on one course at a time - minimum 3 week course completion typical
- Expect 5 hours per day of "at home" work weekly
- Written and verbal assessment of learning
- Cannot accelerate earning credits
- 220 credits to earn home high school diploma
- May be assigned to home school or another site based on availability
- Must provide own transportation
What Subjects are Offered?- College prep, general education, and elective courses available
- May concurrently take up to 2 classes on home campus that are not available via independent study
- Earn additional credits in ROP, Adult Ed Learning Centers, Community College
Program Requirements- Read, write, and comprehend English at 9th grade level
- 220 minimum core score
- Not credit deficient
- Student must be self-starter, self-directed learner. Attendance and completion of work will be monitored to ensure academic progress
- Students receiving Special Education or 504 services with home school and IEP support
- Enrollment after the start of the semester may reduce the number of classes a student can complete
- Once dropped from the program, student will not be readmitted to the program and may be transferred to Serra Continuation High School
Support for Independent Study Program- Fresh Start teacher on every high school campus
- Flexible scheduling by appointment for each student
- Home school Academic Advisors continue to monitor and advise students
